Day 2 of New Zealand (4th Annual Inversion Getaway): Hellsgate and Hobbiton!

Located just south of Matamata was a geothermal spot similar to something you might see at Yellowstone, but on a smaller scale; it was pretty cool (hot, actually...)!

George Bernard Shaw was the man who named the place Hell's Gate.

Hot-hot-hot!!

It smelled like eggs, of course.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

On the path there was this gate to hike to a hot waterfall....really, I mean it is a hot waterfall.

This is a Waka Kereru bird trap. It is filled with water,
and when the bird comes to drink there are looped snares that trap them.

Saw these trees and thought the lichen on them were cool.

Here it is even closer!

Lots of ferny ferns.

Even MORE ferny ferns and cool lichen, AND a PATH!

Cool squiggly roots.

Ferny fern TREES!!!

Finally. The hot waterfall.

Maybe this is where the expression "Those guys are hot." came from...

Wild hydrangeas, just a-growin' out in the middle of the woods...

...annnnnd we're back to the hotpots, and cool rusty rocks and sand...

Cool hot pots.

  A mini Mt. Doom...

Just a massssss of bubbbbbllllinnnggg brewwwww....

A big ol' hot pool!!

And best of all, I got to be with this fine fellow the entire time :)))

After that fine morning excursion, we drove back north to Matamata, and had a lunch of Fish n'Chips...

...then we got ready to board the bus to.... the SHIRE!!!!!! AHHHHH!!!
Ok, so I am telling you right now, if you aren't a Tolkien fan, you just better move right on past the next 175 photos....yes, that is right, and that is AFTER editing, so jest shechyer pie holes and enjoy our walk through Hobbiton.  There won't be many comments through this portion, just the pictures. For those intrepid enough to view them all, there's a video hid amongst them. Good Luck!

This tree is fake, all the leaves have been wired on. Pretty passionate set dressers, I'd say.

Bag End.
