After leaving the Lake Taupo area, we headed south to Wellington,
with a detour east to the Napier area.
Again, the landscape changed; I felt as if I were travelling into Rohan.
The town of Napier is on the east coast of the North Island on a bit of a penninsula; it was a warm day, but the water was COLD! This beach was pretty deserted. We realized later as we drove that the "beachy beach" with the good sand was on the other side of town. We drove to Napier because it had been completely rebuilt after an earthquake in Art Deco style...which I neglected to photograph, but as you will see later, there are many places in NZ with an Art Deco decor.
Cory made a good go of it.....
After my morning plunge into Lake Taupo, this was as far as I went into the water, haha.
After Cory's plunge and a quick drive through Napier, we again headed south to Wellington, enjoying all of the beautiful scenery as we drove.
Yet ANOTHER change in landscape: vineyard country:
As we headed southwest, we saw the mountains appear in the distance.
The road became very curvy....
But that did not slow me down...bwahaha...
I entertained Cory with my singing...
Aha! The west coast highway toward Wellington!
....through Victoria Tunnel, which connects Wellington to Miramar. We chose our lodging in Miramar, as we wanted it to be close to Weta Workshop. It was a GREAT decision!
We stayed at this beautiful B&B right on the harbour:
.
We had great views of the harbour from our bedroom...
Our host told us that Peter Jackson lived right up the hill, and that "he really IS a geek", and that once he dressed up in a gorilla suit and sat in this tree all morning...
Loved all the beautiful woodwork...
Cool light switches :)
Guest Lounge...
Cory enjoyed the front garden.
That evening we went into Seatoun--part of Miramar--to an Argentinian Restaurant:
My chicken liverwurst appetizer....yum!
Cory wasn't too thrilled with it, however. (Check out the great decor!)
A great meal to cap off a LOOOOONG day!
