Blue Penguins and Happy Valley

During our evening in Oamaru, we drove to the Blue Penguin colony, a manmade preserved home for these tiny adult bird.  While walking to the grandstand to prepare to view them, we came across this dock full of shags, or cormorants.

We were not allowed to photograph the penguins arriving to shore during the actual event, but here is a photo of what they look like. It was a priveledge to view these little guys climb up the shore a scuttle to their little homes for the night...there were 3 groups of about 30 in each group.

This was our lodging for the evening: Happy Valley B&B, just south of Oamaru. The proprietors were delightful, and had a beautiful place.

When we arrived (before we went to see the penguins), we were served afternoon tea :)

...and a delicious breakfast the next morning before our long drive to Picton!
