Our Bavarian/Austrian Side Trip: Day 2

Up early and said farewell to Roxanna, our gracious host at her home in Glannig; we headed to Berchtesgarten, Germany, only 17 kilometers west, and arrived about an hour prior to the opening of the Saltzwerke, so drove into the village to look around.

Yet another beautiful little church...

The shop windows all decorated for spring, with the reflections of whatever was across the street:

The little building in the left corner is actually a fountain that has been covered for the winter.

This village square building had historical scenes on its wall:

Caught another "old guy on a bike"...

Love the cobblestones!

Saw an interesting building up above...a monastery, perhaps?

At the Saltzwerke parking lot...heading off across the river to a tour of the Salt Mines!

A little background scenery....:)

Crossing the river...the working salt mine building.

Outside of the little candy/ice cream shop beside the Salt Mine entrance.

How thoughtful! Seat covers for chilly tushes.

Alyssa's drink was very steamy...

We were not allowed to take any photos once we entered the tour, so here are some photos I found on the internet:

We all (even Max!) put on these blue coveralls and hopped aboard this nifty train, which the boys LOOOOVED, which took us deep into the mountainside. (Lyssa started singing Heigh Hoooooo--hee hee)

Then, to get to the next level down, one had the choice of hopping on one of these cool slides....(Lys and I shrieked with Tucker in the middle :)

...or walking down a hairpin trail, which Tasha, Max and Wesley did for the first slide, but on the second slide Wesley bit the bullet and slid down :)

At one point we crossed a salt water lake on a barge....

The whole experience was very fun! And of course they drop you off in front of a souvenir shop where you can get little salt blocks, etc.

Posing with our jackets!

Back across the bridge...

...to the parking lot.

They had some pretty interesting candy names.at that candy store...

ANYWAY....back on the road...

...through another quaint village...

...with another quaint bakery...by the way, in a couple of months ALLLL of these houses will have window boxes at every window with beautiful vine geraniums hanging out...the sight is glorious!

Arriving just 20 minutes later back in view of the Hohensalzburg Castle, to visit the Hellbrunn Palace. We took the children there 19 years ago later in the summertime; it has a section that has a water fountain park that is quite elaborate in its design that is amazing to see in action. Too early in the season to see it this time around, but the grounds are still beautiful, and you Sound of Music fans will recognize the front!

We found the playground! Lyssa remembered this from years ago.

There was a great zipline.....

...which caused normally shy Wesley (at least w/Nana) to warm up to Nana in order to have her help him up to the seat.  There was great weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth when we left this place.....

We headed back to Berchtesgarten again, this time driving past it to the Konigsee next to the beautiful Jungfrau:

We sat on that there yonder shore 19 years ago with our kids and they played in the water.

We were too late for tour boats, which we hadn't planned on doing anyway.

We had fun feeding ducks, though!

We wandered past the shops back to the car...

...and Nana found the MOST hillarious hat!

Farewell, Konigsee....

Heading home via Munich...a longer, but faster route at this time of day.

THAT was FUN~
